Hello there!
Welcome! This is the first post of Carcoma’s devlog, where I will talk about the different aspects of the process of taking what is in my head to, hopefully, something I am not too ashamed of. But, let’s be honest, soon I will probably start going off topic and talking about whatever comes to mind.
So, what is Carcoma? It is my personal project to explore the use of videogames in storytelling. I am interested in narrative driven videogames and in how the combination of videogames and traditional media can be used for new narrative experiences. The setting of this project will mostly be an alternate 19th-20th century Spain, with the point of divergence set around 1840. I will primarily focus on the dark fantasy and horror genres.
And you might be wondering, what does Carcoma mean? In Spanish, the word “carcoma” means woodworm. But the word is also used when something is nagging you, when you have a thought that simply will not go away. So, without spoiling too much, you can see that some of the themes will touch upon psychological horror and questions about perception and reality.
Going now a bit more technical, my plan is to make this project using the BabylonJS game engine. Since this is mostly a hobby project, I would like to have the freedom to make changes without forcing people to download new versions and things like that. The way forward is therefore to make this project available via the web browser and this game engine is a very good option for that. The game will be in 3D and my plan is to do the assets with Blender.
Well, this is all for now. I hope you find it interesting! Feel free to contact me with anything that comes to mind!
